Top Ten Watercolor FAQ

These are the most frequent questions I get about doing what I do, so I figured I would just be helpful and post them here:

1.  How much time does it take to learn?
Honestly, I still don’t feel like I have it all figured out. But it depends on how often you paint. If you do it everyday, maybe just a few months. But here is the thing – you will always get progressively better as long as you keep painting, so that bar keeps moving. Maybe just focus on the process and enjoying that part.

2.  How did you get licensing contracts?
I created a portfolio website, took a class on licensing by Jenna Rainey (called Brand+Brand), created a brand book (a pitch book if you will), and then I just emailed a couple of companies my work, my brand book, and my portfolio. A couple of them liked my work and that’s how it happened. 🙂 I got two contracts within one month! It is totally possible if you put the work into it!

3.  How do you use masking fluid?
These are the basics: use cotton paper in an ideal world (because non-cotton often tears when you remove it). My favorite is Fabriano Artistico or Arches. Leave it on for less than 24 hours. Don’t put it on the paper too thick. Use a ruling pen instead of a brush. I actually made a video about this, but I haven’t posted it yet. Stay tuned! I post them on IG.

4.  How do I get better at drawing?
Focus on drawing basic shapes and simplifying what you see. Take a class. Watch some Youtube. Practice. Practice. More practice.

5.  How do I get better at drawing?

6.  What are your favorite supplies?
See my list here!

7.  How often do you paint?
Everyday if I can help it. I get busy and I have small children, so it doesn’t always happen. But I genuinely love it and would do it every single day if I could.

8.  How do you make it digital?
I scan it at 800 dpi with my Epson Perfection scanner, edit it in photoshop and/or illustrator and reduce my file size to 350 dpi.

9.  What are your favorite things to paint?
Oceans, birds, animals, nature stuff.

10.  How old are you?
40. Ha ha. I don’t know why I get this question, but I do!
